About this service

This service provides an easy way for ethnic minority communities to bank. If you have a limited understanding of English or Chinese, or you have a friend or relative who does, you can follow these guidelines to open a Hong Kong Dollar Statement Savings account. This can be used for everyday spending or savings, or to receive a salary or other payments.

Eligibility

To use this service you'll need to be:

a Hong Kong resident
18 years old or over
able to speak or read Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi or Nepali

How to open an account with this service

Visit one of our designated branches (see below) with your translator. Your translator may be a relative/friend/NGO worker/3^rd party professional who is able to speak English or Chinese and is able to communicate with you in your native language.
Our branch staff will show you a video in your native language (Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi or Nepali) to explain more about the basic services that come with this account.
We will then take you through the account opening process. We have translated a few important documents into your native language to help you gain a good understanding of how this bank account works.
If you have applied for an ATM card with the account, we will send the card and PIN to your address once your account is approved. Please note that our ATM service is only available in English or Chinese.

This information is for reference only. We may ask you to provide extra documents as necessary. HSBC has the final decision on whether or not to approve your application.

You can make deposits and cash withdrawals. You can pay bills, transfer money to third party accounts and receive money into your account (from allowances or salary payments, for example). You can also apply for a bank card which will allow you to use our Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) to withdraw money or manage your account.

There is no minimum balance requirement for this account, but we suggest you keep enough money in your account to cover your everyday living expenses.

Since our phone banking services only support English and Chinese, we wouldn't suggest you use phone banking to manage this account.

Our online and mobile banking services only support English and Chinese. We don't encourage you to register for these services unless you're confident that you're able to fully understand the instructions.

No, credit cards, investment accounts, insurance products and loans are not part of this basic bank account service.

There is no minimum balance fee and there are no monthly account fees. Some additional services do incur charges, for details please refer to our banking tariff or Summary Tariff (Hindi/Urdu/Punjabi/Nepali).

No, you can only operate one account with this service. If you have a particular banking need, please talk to our staff at one of the designated branches above.

If you need to use our branch banking services, we encourage you to visit one of our designated branches as we do not have Ethnic Minority Customer Service Ambassadors at other locations.
